South African Health Leader Praises Six-Month HIV Prevention Injection as Potential 'Game Changer'

At the 2025 International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, health experts discussed the potential of long-acting injectable preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention.

Hasina Subedar, a senior technical advisor at South Africa’s National Department of Health, highlighted how six-month injectable PrEP could transform HIV prevention, especially for high-risk and hard-to-reach populations.

Subedar emphasized the importance of leveraging newer technologies to build on past successes. She noted that longer-acting options offer more consistent protection, particularly for individuals who struggle with daily medication or regular clinic visits.

She pointed out pregnant women as a group that could benefit significantly from a six-month injectable, providing coverage through key stages of motherhood with fewer visits.

Young adults, especially those entering universities, are another priority group. Subedar mentioned that many in this demographic may not prioritize HIV prevention and could benefit from discreet, low-maintenance options like long-acting injectables.

Subedar highlighted the importance of matching the right prevention tools with the appropriate populations. She believes that six-month injectables could make HIV prevention more practical and accessible for those who need it most.
