Pakistan and the European Union (EU) have agreed to enhance cooperation in security and counter-terrorism, among other sectors, during a bilateral dialogue, as per a press release by the Foreign Office (FO).

EU Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Riina Kionka had previously stated that European companies see Pakistan as a potential business destination and are exploring new economic partnership opportunities.

The EU is Pakistan’s second-largest trading partner, with the GSP+ status providing duty-free or minimum duty on European exports.

During the 10th Political Dialogue in Brussels, Pakistan and the EU discussed regional and international issues, emphasizing deeper dialogue on security matters.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Strategic Engagement Plan (SEP) signed in 2019 and aim to enhance cooperation in all areas covered under the SEP.

They also agreed to continue close engagement under the GSP+ framework and acknowledged meaningful cooperation on migration issues, with the third Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Dialogue scheduled for later in 2025.

The EU and Pakistan condemned terrorism and emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy to address contentious issues while upholding international law and agreements.

Discussions also included the situations in Ukraine and Indian-occupied Kashmir, stressing the pursuit of peaceful solutions in line with international law and the UN Charter.

Both parties called for improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza, supporting initiatives for a just and lasting peace in Palestine based on a two-state solution.

Pakistan and the EU expressed their commitment to convene the 7th Strategic Dialogue in 2025 and agreed to hold the next Political Dialogue meeting in Islamabad next year.

Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch led Pakistan’s delegation, while the EU delegation was headed by Olof Skoog, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service.

Improved relations were also noted between Pakistan and the US, with President Donald Trump praising Pakistan’s efforts for regional peace and stability during a meeting with Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House.

United States Central Command chief Army General Michael Kurilla commended Pakistan as a valuable partner in counter-terrorism efforts, highlighting its actions against terrorism in Balochistan and groups like the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K).
