Philippine President Marcos Jr. to Boost Economic Ties, Strengthen US Partnership in Trump Meeting

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. aims to enhance economic cooperation and reinforce the defense alliance between the Philippines and the United States during his upcoming meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington. The Philippines seeks to negotiate a trade deal with the US to address the 20% tariff imposed on Filipino goods entering the American market.

Prior to the Marcos-Trump summit, a trade delegation from Manila was dispatched to the US to continue discussions following the increase in tariffs by the Trump administration. President Marcos is scheduled to visit Washington D.C. on 20-22 July 2025 to underscore the Philippines' commitment to its alliance with the US, explore avenues for enhanced security and economic collaboration, and engage in dialogues on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez stated that President Marcos will have face-to-face meetings with President Trump, as well as engage with key US officials and business leaders during his visit. Marcos, the first Southeast Asian leader invited to Washington by Trump, will be accommodated at the historic Blair House near the White House during his three-day stay.

The Philippines and the US have strengthened their maritime cooperation and joint military exercises, extending these partnerships to like-minded nations such as Japan and Australia in response to China's growing assertiveness in the South China Sea. Concerns have been raised by analysts over escalating incidents in the disputed waters, potentially leading to a significant armed conflict involving the US, a defense treaty ally of Manila.

The US has reiterated its commitment to support the Philippines under the 1951 mutual defense treaty in case of any attacks on Filipino forces, ships, or aircraft in the South China Sea. Despite not being directly involved in the territorial disputes, the US has emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring unrestricted access to the strategic waters.
