Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company Shuts Down, Resulting in Loss of Over 50 Jobs
Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company has announced the closure of its operations, leading to more than 50 staff members losing their jobs. The company, known for its multi-million euro brewery and distillery in Fossa overlooking the lakes of Killarney, cited challenges from the covid pandemic and recent tariff threats as reasons for the shutdown. Despite significant investments and plans for expansion, including a failed merger with a US partner, the company faced insurmountable difficulties that ultimately led to this decision.

More than 50 staff at Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company have been informed that the company will cease operations at both of its premises, including the brewery, whiskey distillery, and visitors’ center in Fossa.
The company has invested millions of euros in the Fossa premises, which opened in 2022 and features a restaurant, bars, and function rooms. However, challenges such as the covid pandemic and recent tariff threats have severely impacted its business potential, leading to delays in operations and expansion plans.
All 55 staff members are set to lose their jobs, following meetings held by the company. The company, with strong local roots, had invested over €30m in the luxury premises in Fossa on the Ring of Kerry.
Despite plans to merge with a US partner falling through earlier this year, the company went into examinership in April, hoping to secure its future through the process. Various challenges, including raw material costs, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical uncertainties, have put significant pressure on the business, affecting revenue and profitability.
The uncertainty over tariffs and a decline in tourism have further impacted the business. The announcement during Killarney Race Week, a significant event in the local tourism calendar, has been a blow to the community.
The examiner appointed to the company is seeking court approval on Friday morning, with no comments provided by the spokesperson at this time.
