Man with Northern Ontario ties among three miners rescued in British Columbia

Diamond drillers working at a gold-copper mine in British Columbia were trapped by a fall of ground on Tuesday. A man with Northern Ontario connections was among the three miners rescued from the British Columbia mine this week. The three diamond drill crew members - Kevin Coumbs, Darien Maduke, and Jesse Chubaty - were safely brought out from the Red Chris copper and gold mine property. All three are employees of B.C.'s Hy-Tech Drilling.

Newmont Corporation released details around 3 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time Friday, stating that the individuals are safe, in good health, and receiving support from medical and wellness teams. Kevin Coumbs is from Ontario, with family members in Kirkland Lake, Northern Ontario. The rescue involved a round-the-clock effort and careful planning by Newmont Corporation.

The company used a remotely-controlled scooptram and drones for the rescue operation. The workers were trapped during exploration drilling when two separate fall-of-ground incidents occurred. The workers were sent to an underground refuge station, where they remained safe until the rescue.

The incident at the Red Chris Mine is under investigation, and mining operations have resumed in the open pit area. The underground area where the incident occurred remains secured until safety reassessment is completed.
