India's Jaishankar Addresses US Tariff Threat Over Russian Oil Imports

External affairs minister S Jaishankar expressed India's concerns to US senator Lindsey Graham about a proposed bill that could impose up to 500% tariffs on countries importing Russian oil, including India. The legislation aims to levy heavy tariffs on imports from nations trading with Russia, affecting India and China due to their energy connections with Moscow.

During a press conference in Washington, Jaishankar stated that they have been in touch with Senator Graham regarding the bill's potential impact on India's interests. The bill, introduced by Senator Graham, seeks to impose severe sanctions on Russia and its trading partners if Moscow does not engage in peace negotiations or threatens Ukraine's sovereignty.

The proposed legislation has garnered support from over 80 co-sponsors in the Senate and could potentially override a presidential veto. It suggests imposing harsh tariffs on countries buying energy or resources from Russia, with an exception for nations supporting Ukraine's defense.

Republican lawmakers are awaiting President Trump's approval before advancing the bill in Congress. Despite pressure from Western nations, India has continued to import Russian oil, citing national interest and energy needs as the driving factors behind its oil purchases from Moscow.
