Hurling Legend DJ Carey Admits to Scamming People with Fake Cancer Treatment Claims

DJ Carey, a hurling legend, has pleaded guilty to defrauding people by falsely claiming he needed money for cancer treatment. Carey, a nine-time All-Star hurler from Kilkenny, admitted to 10 out of 21 charges in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He stood in court and accepted the charges, showing no emotion. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 29th. Carey induced businessman Denis O’Brien to give him money for cancer treatment between January 2014 and September 2022. The total amount involved in the fraud was not disclosed.

Despite his achievements in hurling, including winning five All-Ireland senior titles, Carey now faces legal consequences for his fraudulent actions. He captained Kilkenny to victory in 2003 and was named Hurler of the Year in 2000. Following his retirement from playing, he remained involved in the sport by managing the Kilkenny U21 hurlers and serving as a selector for the county senior team.
