George Gibney, the former Irish National and Olympic Team coach, is facing 79 charges relating to the alleged sexual abuse of four girls he coached in the 1970s and 1980s, according to US court records. He was arrested after a Garda request to extradite him to Ireland.

Legal filings show that Gibney is accused of 78 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape involving minors aged between eight and 15. The criminal complaint states that the alleged abuse occurred when he coached the girls.

Dublin District Court issued 79 warrants for his arrest on June 6th, 2023. Four new alleged victims were not part of previous criminal proceedings against Gibney in the 1990s.

Gibney, in his 70s, is set to appear in a US court next week. Gardaí have been investigating fresh allegations of child sex abuse against him as a swimming coach.

He was taken into custody in Orlando and granted a federal public defender as his attorney. A detention hearing is scheduled for next Friday.

Gibney, a former coach at Trojan swimming club in Dublin, faced criminal charges in 1993 but successfully halted the prosecution. He later fled Ireland and moved to the US.
