Filipino fishers are alarmed by the surge of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) as it disrupts local livelihoods and poses risks to both people and the environment. The presence of nearly 50 Chinese ships in the area has led to fear and intimidation among Filipino fisherfolk, affecting their traditional fishing grounds. Fishers in Zambales, Palawan, and nearby provinces are avoiding these areas due to concerns about encountering foreign vessels. Pamalakaya, a progressive fisherfolk group, also highlighted the potential environmental damage caused by the presence of these ships, including harm to coral reefs and marine resources. They have called for the demilitarization of the West Philippine Sea to allow Filipinos to fish without fear of foreign military forces. The Philippine Navy has reported a significant increase in Chinese ship activity in the region, with 49 vessels monitored in June, the highest monthly count this year.
