WA Government Approves Crown Perth to Operate Casino After Royal Commission
The Western Australia government has deemed Crown Perth suitable to continue operating its casino without any penalties or conditions, following a Royal Commission that found the casino unfit three years ago. Despite past failures, the government has decided to allow Crown Perth to maintain its gaming license, with a focus on implementing new procedures to ensure compliance with recommendations.

Crown Perth will keep its gaming licence without penalty or conditions, three years after a Royal Commission found it unfit to hold a licence in WA. The future of the state's only casino has been in the hands of the government since the final report of the Perth Casino Royal Commission was tabled in state parliament in 2022.
Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia stated that Crown Perth is suitable for operating a casino without any conditions or penalties, based on advice from the Gaming and Wagering Commission. The royal commission identified failures by Crown Resorts in Perth, including money laundering and permitting criminal junkets.
An independent monitor oversaw remediation activity at Crown for over two years, with 59 recommendations made in the 1,000-page report. So far, 32 have been completed, with 18 remaining to be implemented and nine waiting on legislative change.
Mr Papalia decided against taking action to remove Crown's license or apply penalties, stating that the remediation work has been sufficient. The royal commission also highlighted deficiencies in WA's gaming regulator, the Gaming and Wagering Commission.
GWC Chair Gary Dreibergs mentioned improvements in staffing and resourcing. Crown Resorts agreed to a takeover by Blackstone in 2022, with the new ownership playing a vital role in improving oversight on criminal activity.
