M60 Traffic Update: Crash Closes Motorway for Over 24 Hours

Part of the M60 remains shut - more than 24 hours after a dramatic nine-vehicle crash. Emergency services were called out to the scene between junctions 27 at the Portwood roundabout and junction one for the Stockport Pyramid just before 11.30am yesterday morning (July 7).

Both carriageways have since been closed after the crash, which involved three HGVs, four cars and two vans. Thankfully, nobody has been seriously hurt but three people have suffered 'minor injuries'.

One HGV is said to have crossed through the central reservation and struck 'several lamp columns in the process'. Another HGV shed its load of beer barrels into the carriageways as a result. There are also said to be 'several ruptured fuel tanks' leaking diesel.

National Highways was finally able to reopen the anticlockwise carriageway by 1.50pm today (Tuesday), with one lane remaining closed as barrier repairs continue. The clockwise carriageway remains fully closed between junctions 25, at Bredbury, and one, at the Stockport Pyramid.

A GMP spokesperson said: 'Yesterday morning (July 7, 2025) at around 11.26am we were called to a road traffic collision on the M60 at junction 27, Portwood, Stockport. Emergency services attended and fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Three HGVs, two vans and four cars were involved in the collision. Three people were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries as a precaution. We are now appealing for any witnesses with dash cam footage of the incident to come forward to help with our enquires. Anyone with footage can call 101 quoting log 1196 of July 7, 2025, or use the LiveChat function on our website at www.gmp.police.uk'

Drivers have also been stuck in a second incident this afternoon, with two lanes shut following a break-down between junctions 17 and 16, near Prestwich. Traffic has been heavy along the M60 as drivers avoid the Stockport closure, while other A-roads in the town have also been congested.
