China protests India over PM Modi's greetings to Dalai Lama on 90th birthday

China protested to India over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday and the attendance of Indian officials at the celebrations. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that New Delhi should understand Beijing’s sensitivities on Tibet-related issues.

Ms. Mao stated that the Dalai Lama, considered a political exile, has engaged in separatist activities to separate Xizang (Tibet) from China under the guise of religion. She urged India to recognize the anti-separatist nature of the Dalai Lama and honor its commitments to China on Xizang-related issues.

India was advised to act prudently and refrain from meddling in China’s internal affairs. Prime Minister Modi had extended warm wishes to the Dalai Lama, praising his message of love, compassion, and moral discipline. Indian officials, including Union Ministers and Chief Ministers, attended the Dalai Lama's birthday celebrations in Dharamshala.

China objected to Minority Affairs Minister Rijiju’s statement on the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, urging India to handle Tibet-related issues cautiously to avoid straining bilateral relations. Ms. Mao reiterated China’s stance on the reincarnation process, emphasizing adherence to religious rituals and historical conventions.
