Trump Reverses Decision, Agrees to Resume Arms Deliveries to Ukraine

President Donald Trump has changed his position on Ukraine and announced that the US will send more defensive weapons to Kyiv to help the country defend itself against escalating Russian attacks. This decision comes just days after pausing critical arm deliveries.

During a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump emphasized the need for Ukraine to be able to defend itself, stating, 'We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves. They’re getting hit very hard now. We’re going to send some more weapons — defensive weapons primarily.'

The US Defense Department, following Trump's directive, will send additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to support their self-defense efforts while working towards lasting peace. The Pentagon confirmed that its assessment of military shipments globally remains ongoing.

Trump mentioned on Friday that Ukraine would need Patriot missiles for defense, although he did not mention them specifically on Monday. The Pentagon's announcement did not provide details about the specific weapons being sent.

The pause in arm deliveries was part of a routine review of all aid provided by the US to countries globally, not just Ukraine, according to White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt. The assessment aims to ensure that all outgoing aid aligns with America's interests, as directed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Following a conversation with Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that they agreed to enhance Kyiv's defense capabilities against Russian assaults. Discussions included defense manufacturing, acquisitions, and financial commitments. Ukraine has requested Patriot missile systems from the US to protect its cities from Russian aerial attacks.

Germany is in talks to purchase Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine to help address the defense needs. Recent reports indicate that Russia has intensified its aerial assaults on civilian areas in Ukraine, launching drones and missiles. Zelensky reported a significant increase in Russian attacks on Ukraine.
