The Supreme Court has directed parties objecting to the release of the movie 'Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder' to approach the Delhi High Court to challenge the Centre's order allowing the movie's exhibition with 6 edits. The High Court is requested to hear the matter on Monday for a preliminary hearing.
The parties objecting to the film's release are Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani and Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case. The Court indicated its inclination to refer the matters to the Delhi High Court and questioned whether the film's release should be stayed until then.
Various senior advocates presented arguments for and against the stay on the film's release, highlighting past court decisions on similar cases. The Court clarified that it has not expressed any opinion on the merits of the case and all contentions can be raised before the High Court.
Background: Kanhaiya Lal Teli, an Udaipur-based tailor, was murdered in June 2022, allegedly in retaliation for a social media post. The movie based on this case is facing objections, leading to legal proceedings.
