Man Allowed to Represent Himself in Trial for Alleged Attempt to Harm Trump

A man charged with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump in South Florida last year can represent himself during his trial, as ruled by US District Judge Aileen Cannon. The defendant, Ryan Routh, is set to stand trial in September after pleading not guilty to charges related to the assassination attempt. Despite his limited education, Routh expressed readiness to represent himself during the trial. The federal public defenders had requested to be removed from the case due to difficulties in communication with Routh.

Routh was arrested after a Secret Service agent thwarted his attempt to shoot Trump while he was playing golf at his country club in West Palm Beach. Prosecutors allege that Routh had plotted the assassination for weeks before the incident. Routh has also been charged with state offenses of terrorism and attempted murder.

During a hearing, Routh expressed frustration with his attorneys and suggested the possibility of being used in a prisoner exchange with other countries. The judge has allowed Routh to represent himself while maintaining standby counsel. The trial is scheduled to begin on September 8.
