Singapore to send record 72 athletes to World Aquatics Championships

Singapore will send its largest ever contingent to the World Aquatics Championships this year, with 72 athletes across five disciplines, announced Singapore Aquatics president Kenneth Goh. Thirty athletes will make their debut, showcasing the depth of talent nurtured by years of investment in development pathways and infrastructure.

At the 2023 edition, 27 athletes represented Singapore across four disciplines. The championships feature swimming, water polo, diving, artistic swimming, open water swimming, and high diving, with Singapore not competing in high diving this year.

The competition, from Jul 11 to Aug 3, is a key highlight as Singapore marks six decades of independence. Goh emphasized the need to challenge against the best to become the best in the world.

Athletes expressed excitement about competing in front of the home crowd, citing the advantage of familiarity with the environment. Swimmer Gan Ching Hwee and others look forward to inspiring future generations of athletes and hosting their foreign counterparts.

Captain of the men’s water polo team, Lee Kai Yang, highlighted the unmatched support from the home crowd, recalling his debut during the 2015 SEA Games. The team’s competition attire for the championships was also unveiled by sponsor TYR.
