Queensland Nurses and Midwives Increase Strike Action Over Pay Dispute

Tens of thousands of nurses and midwives in Queensland have increased strike action, accusing the government of 'gaslighting' them during pay negotiations. The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) stage two industrial action involves around 45,000 workers refusing non-clinical tasks at public hospitals and healthcare facilities. Nurses are not working overtime without notice, making beds, or transferring patients. They are also taking breaks in full. Negotiations began in January, with the union seeking a 13% pay rise over three years, while the government offered 11%.

QNMU Secretary Sarah Beaman criticized the government for not fulfilling its promise of leading pay and conditions. She emphasized the importance of safe working conditions over luxury purchases. Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie refrained from commenting on the strike action, stating that negotiations are ongoing. Despite the strike, Beaman remains hopeful for a resolution.

Support for the strike was evident, with patients and visitors acknowledging the challenging work environment for nurses. The union emphasized the need for the government to respect its promises and deliver on commitments.
