Senator Loren Legarda has filed a bill seeking to comprehensively ban all forms of online gambling and their promotion in the Philippines.
Legarda explained that the move aims to protect vulnerable sectors from addiction, exploitation, and financial harm caused by online gambling.
The proposed law targets online casinos, e-sabong, digital lotteries, virtual slots, and sports betting, as well as the publishing, advertising, endorsing, and promoting of gambling-related content online.
The Department of Justice, Department of Information and Communications Technology, and National Telecommunications Commission will work together to issue takedown or blocking orders for gambling sites. Internet service providers must comply within 48 hours or face penalties.
Individual offenders could face imprisonment or fines, while companies may be fined and their officers imprisoned. Legarda emphasized the negative impact of uncontrolled gambling on families and society, urging an end to the glorification of online gambling.
