Scientists reveal how and when the universe may end

Scientists believe the universe will end in a 'Big Crunch' after expanding for billions of years since the Big Bang. Dark energy may play a key role in this process. A recent study predicts the universe will start shrinking in seven billion years and fully collapse in 33.3 billion years.

Scientists have shared what they believe to be the most likely way the universe will end. All theories about the universe's end are extreme. The universe has been expanding since the Big Bang, aided by dark energy. NASA describes dark energy as a negative pressure pushing space outward. There are various explanations for dark energy, but some fear it may weaken over time, leading to the 'Big Crunch' where the universe collapses back into a singularity.

According to a study by scientists from Cornell University, the Big Crunch could begin in around seven billion years when the universe reaches its maximum expansion size. It will then take several billion years for the universe to return to its original state, with the entire process estimated to take 33.3 billion years before the universe dies.

Tracking dark energy's behavior led to the conclusion that the Big Crunch will end the universe in 33.3 billion years. Michael Levi from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory states that our future depends on dark energy and that studying it is crucial to understanding the universe's fate.
