Asylum seeker rapes 12-year-old girl above shop in Birmingham
An asylum seeker from Syria, illegally working in a shop, lured a vulnerable 12-year-old girl with promises of safety and food before raping her in a bedroom. The man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for sexually assaulting and raping the underage girl.

An asylum seeker named Mohammed Wahid Mohammed raped a 12-year-old girl above a shop where he was working illegally. He lured the victim into Villa Supermarket in Handsworth by offering her a vape and crisps, claiming it was unsafe outside. The girl, who had left home and traveled to Birmingham alone, was then attacked in a bedroom. Wahid Mohammed was sentenced to 12 years in prison for sexually assaulting the girl and convicted of three counts of rape. He wept in court during the sentencing. The judge also labeled him a 'dangerous' offender and imposed an extended five-year licence. The victim, who arrived in Birmingham in the evening, was approached by a homeless lady and taken to the shop where Wahid Mohammed was working. Despite the victim's young age, he coerced her into the shop under false pretenses. He then led her to a bedroom and assaulted her. The girl was rescued by a family from a nearby takeaway who noticed something was amiss and alerted the authorities. Wahid Mohammed was arrested two days later and claimed the sex was consensual, despite the victim being underage. He had no prior criminal record and was seeking asylum from Syria.
The judge described the incident as a sustained event and highlighted the exploitation of the young victim. The issue of deportation was left to the authorities to decide at a later stage.
