Autogate malfunction causes delays at KLIA and Johor checkpoints, Malaysian passport holders unaffected

Long queues have been reported at major entry points nationwide as tens of thousands of foreigners faced issues using the autogate facility. Malaysian passport holders, however, were unaffected by the glitch.
The breakdown, starting around noon on Friday, involved over 200 autogates across the country, impacting gateways like KL International Airport Terminal 1 and 2, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (BSI), and Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ (KSAB) in Johor.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban stated that the department is investigating the matter and working on troubleshooting the system. The cause of the failure is still unknown, with investigations ongoing to determine if there was any sabotage or hacking involved.
At BSI, long queues were observed, with mainly Singaporeans waiting for over four hours for immigration clearance. Immigration officers have opened all lanes to manually clear passports, and Rela personnel have been deployed to manage the influx of visitors at the land checkpoints with Singapore.
Since June 1, 2024, visitors from 63 countries and diplomats serving in Malaysia and their family members have been eligible to use the autogate for immigration clearance.
