Mount Sinai Improves Treatment for Osteoporosis Fractures

The Leni and Peter W. May Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has implemented the American Orthopaedic Association's Own the Bone® program. This program aims to help identify, evaluate, and treat patients who have osteoporosis- or low bone density-related fractures. Over 300 healthcare institutions nationwide have joined this initiative.

The program focuses on fragility fractures, which are broken bones resulting from a fall from standing height or less. It emphasizes the comprehensive care that hospitals and clinics can provide to these patients.

Studies indicate that up to 50 percent of women and 25 percent of men over 50 will experience a fragility fracture in their lifetime. Patients who have had a fragility fracture are at a higher risk of experiencing another fracture. However, less than 50 percent of Medicare patients receive recommended osteoporosis care after a fragility fracture.

Mount Sinai now offers a fracture liaison service through the Own the Bone® program. This service helps in documenting, tracking, and benchmarking the care of fragility fracture patients. A care coordinator, such as a nurse or physician's assistant, ensures that these patients are identified, evaluated, and treated based on their specific needs.

Additionally, Mount Sinai has adopted Own the Bone's 10 prevention measures to enhance patient care. These measures include nutrition, physical activity, lifestyle counseling, pharmacotherapy recommendation, bone mineral density testing, and communication of patient risk factors and recommendations.

The Own the Bone program allows for a more individualized approach to fracture care, providing a personalized experience for patients with fragility fractures. This initiative enhances the orthopedic care offered by Mount Sinai to the community.
