Robot-assisted surgery aids Cambridge market vendor's return to work

A market stall holder, Charlotte Gregersen, 62, underwent thoracic surgery at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge to remove metastatic cancer in her right lung. The minimally invasive operation allowed her to leave the hospital the next day and return to her clothing stall at Cambridge market within a month. Charlotte expressed gratitude towards the robot-assisted surgery for helping her get back to her job sooner.

Charlotte's cancer journey began nine years ago and involved various treatments. The operation at Royal Papworth was led by consultant thoracic surgeon Mr Aman Coonar, using the Versius surgical robot from CMR Surgical based in Cambridge. The robotic-assisted surgery was minimally invasive, resulting in a quicker recovery time for Charlotte.

Versius enables surgeons to work precisely inside the chest cavity through tiny incisions, providing a magnified 3D view. The system, known for causing little pain, is portable and can be moved between theatres. Royal Papworth Hospital has been using Versius for thoracic surgery since 2023, performing over 250 minimally invasive procedures.

Massimiliano Colella, the chief executive of CMR Surgical, emphasized the positive impact of Versius on patients like Charlotte, highlighting improved outcomes and quicker recovery times. The use of British-designed and British-built technology is a source of pride for the surgical team at Royal Papworth.
