Melbourne commuters faced major disruptions due to a fire near a rail line. Train services at Southern Cross Station were halted in both directions when a fire erupted beneath the Dudley St rail bridge in West Melbourne. Emergency services responded to a burning 30 by 10-metre Metrol storage building under the bridge on Roslyn St around 3pm on Wednesday.
Firefighters arrived within six minutes to find a large fire under the railway bridge. Six lines, including Craigieburn, Frankston, Sunbury, Upfield, Werribee, and Williamstown, were affected. The blaze was brought under control by 3.40pm. Three firefighters in breathing apparatus contained the fire to the underpass. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
