Hamas to Release 10 Prisoners for Ceasefire Deal

As Israel aligned with US President Donald Trump's optimistic view on the possibility of a ceasefire and prisoner-release agreement in Gaza, Hamas described the negotiations as challenging due to Israel's stubbornness. However, Hamas stated that it was making serious efforts to overcome obstacles. The group announced the release of 10 prisoners as part of the peace talks but highlighted several unresolved issues, including aid flow, Israeli forces' withdrawal from Gaza, and guarantees for a lasting ceasefire.

The announcement followed four days of mediated talks facilitated by Qatar. Despite the hurdles, Hamas emphasized its commitment to achieving freedom, safety, and a dignified life for the Palestinian people. A Palestinian source involved in the discussions revealed that Israel was hindering progress by restricting aid entry into Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after meetings in Washington, expressed optimism about reaching a deal, echoing President Trump's hopes for a Gaza ceasefire soon. In contrast, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her criticism of US policy on Gaza. Rubio accused Albanese of pushing for ICC action against US and Israeli officials and companies.

Albanese's report condemned companies profiting from what she termed the Israeli economy of illegal occupation, apartheid, and genocide in Palestinian territories. Rubio labeled her actions as biased, antisemitic, and supportive of terrorism. The Gaza civil defense agency reported 26 casualties in Israeli airstrikes, including six children, describing the attacks as catastrophic.
