DOH Warns Public About ILI and Leptospirosis During Rainy Season
The Department of Health in Central Luzon cautions residents, especially those in low-lying areas, to be vigilant against influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and leptospirosis during the rainy season. ILI is a contagious respiratory infection caused by viruses, while leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated flood water. The DOH advises preventive measures and early treatment for these diseases.

The Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon has warned the public against influenza-like illnesses or ILI and leptospirosis amid rains and floods. The agency advises residents, especially those in low-lying areas, to take precautions against these diseases prevalent during the rainy season.
Influenza is a contagious respiratory infection caused by viruses type A, B, or C, leading to severe illness in high-risk groups. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, sore throat, headache, body aches, runny nose, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea, especially among children. Flu cases peak from July to October.
To prevent ILI, the public is advised to avoid crowded places, stay home when sick, minimize contact with those having influenza, and get an annual flu vaccine between April to June. Initial management includes rest, hydration, nutritious food, and early use of antiviral medication like oseltamivir within 48 hours of symptom onset.
The DOH also warns against leptospirosis, a bacterial infection caused by Leptospira commonly found in rat urine. The disease spreads when flood water contaminated with animal urine enters the body through skin wounds or cracks. Symptoms may include fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, red eyes, and rashes. Severe cases can lead to kidney damage, liver failure, meningitis, or breathing difficulties.
To prevent leptospirosis, dispose garbage to control rat populations, avoid wading in floodwaters, wear protective boots, and seek medical help when symptoms appear.
