IIM Kolkata Rape Case Update: 9-Member SIT Formed After Accused Sent to Police Custody

Kolkata police provided an update on the alleged IIM Kolkata rape case, stating that a 9-member special investigation team (SIT) has been established to look into the matter. The prime accused, Mahaveer Toppannavar alias Parmanand Jain, was placed in 7-day police custody until July 19 on July 12.

According to Kolkata police, the DC Southwest Division formed the 9-member SIT for the case, as reported by ANI. The accused was arrested on Saturday following a complaint filed by a woman, a clinical psychologist, at Haridevpur police station.

As per a PTI report, during the court proceedings, the prosecution argued for police custody citing prima facie evidence of the crime and medical support for the victim. The court granted police custody until July 19, said Kolkata Police Chief Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal.

The alleged incident occurred in the boys' hostel of the Institute of Management-Calcutta by a student on Friday. However, the woman's father disputed the 'rape' claims, stating that his daughter sustained injuries from an accident. He mentioned receiving a call from his daughter about the accident and her subsequent hospitalization at SSKM Hospital, denying the police's version of events.
