Sotheby's is auctioning the largest piece of Mars found on Earth, weighing 54.388 lbs. (24.67 kg) and estimated at $2 - 4 million. The meteorite, known as NWA 16788, was found in Niger in November 2023 after being blown off Mars by an asteroid strike. It is 70% larger than the next biggest Martian piece on Earth and represents nearly 7% of all Martian material here. The rock measures 15x11x6 inches (375x279x152 mm) and is a rare olivine-microgabbroic shergottite type. It has a glassy surface from burning in Earth's atmosphere. The auction also includes a juvenile Ceratosaurus dinosaur skeleton from the late Jurassic period, estimated at $4 - 6 million.
