Israel's troop presence delays Gaza ceasefire talks, say Palestinian sources

Negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire between Hamas and Israel are hindered by Israel's plan to keep troops in the territory, according to Palestinian sources. Talks in Qatar aim to resolve the 21-month conflict, with the release of 10 hostages contingent on a 60-day ceasefire agreement. Progress is stalled by Israel's refusal to withdraw all troops, prompting concerns over reoccupation of Gaza.

Israel's troop presence delays Gaza ceasefire talks, say Palestinian sources

Indirect talks between Hamas and Israel for a ceasefire in Gaza are being held up by Israel's proposals to keep troops in the territory, according to two Palestinian sources with knowledge of the discussions.

Delegations from both sides started discussions in Qatar to try to agree on a temporary halt to the conflict sparked by Hamas' attack on Israel. Both parties have mentioned the release of 10 hostages if a 60-day ceasefire is reached.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope for a deal in the coming days, leading to further talks for a permanent end to hostilities. However, one Palestinian source revealed that Israel's refusal to withdraw all troops from Gaza is hindering progress.

Mediators have requested a postponement of talks until the arrival of US President Donald Trump's special envoy in Doha. The source mentioned Israel's proposal to maintain military forces in over 40% of Palestinian territory, displacing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to a small area near Rafah.

The source stated that Hamas' delegation rejects the Israeli maps as they could lead to the reoccupation of half of Gaza, limiting freedom of movement. Another Palestinian source accused the Israeli delegation of stalling and obstructing the agreement to prolong the conflict.
