New Film Celebrates Irish Influence in Culinary and Drinks World

The writer-director of a new film about the work of the Irish in the culinary and drinks world aims to showcase the diversity of Ireland beyond stereotypes. Frank Mannion, a filmmaker from Carlow, has created the documentary 'A Sip of Irish,' following his previous works 'Quintessentially Irish' and 'Quintessentially British.'

Mannion expressed his desire to appeal to international audiences who often associate Ireland solely with Guinness and Irish stew. He highlighted the decline in alcohol consumption in Ireland over the past two decades alongside the growth of drinks exports.

The film features artisan brands like Killahora Orchards in Co Cork and Kinnegar Brewing in Letterkenny, emphasizing craftsmanship over mainstream attractions. Interviews with industry experts like Deirdre O'Carroll, the blender of Redbreast, Midleton, and Jameson whiskeys, offer insights into the whiskey-making process.

Mannion also explores the success of Irish emigrants in the wine world, such as the Lynch family behind Château Lynch-Bages. Surprising facts, like the origin of Bailey's Irish Cream and Russell Crowe's investment in Muff Liquor, add depth to the narrative.
