Criticism of Gardaí for Alleged Strip Searches of Protestors at Gaza Vigil in Dublin

Members of the public criticized gardaí over their treatment of a group of women at a protest for Gaza in Dublin. Fourteen people were arrested after blocking an entrance to Leinster House during a Mothers Against Genocide group protest against the Israeli war in Gaza. Some women were allegedly strip-searched, and one was subjected to a cavity search. Documents revealed 132 correspondences to the Department of Justice regarding the protestors' treatment by gardaí that day.

Concerns were raised about the level of force used by gardaí compared to other protests. The number of gardaí present at the protest was questioned, as it seemed to heavily outnumber the protestors. Emails to the Minister for Justice and the Taoiseach's Office highlighted concerns over alleged strip searches and the need for clear guidelines and oversight.

A joint letter from Senators questioned the treatment of arrested protestors and requested a full report from each Garda station. Both the Department of Justice and gardaí declined to comment further on the issue. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris defended the searches, stating that they were conducted professionally and lawfully.
