Seán McKiernan, a former chair of Cavan County Council, has pleaded guilty to stealing over €172,000 from a charity in Co Meath. The thefts occurred in amounts ranging from €500 to €7,500 in 2019. McKiernan, 43, admitted to two sample charges in court. He is scheduled for sentencing on 21 October.

Former Cavan County Council Chair Admits Stealing €172,000 from Charity

A former cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Seán McKiernan, pleaded guilty to stealing over €172,000 from a Co Meath charity. The thefts, ranging from €500 to €7,500, occurred in 2019 at Navan Mental Health Housing Association. McKiernan, 43, admitted to two sample charges, one for €5,230 in March 2019 and another for €800 in April 2020. He was a Fine Gael councillor from 2007 to 2014 and served as the youngest Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council in 2011. McKiernan was also involved in various public service roles and had been part of Fine Gael's national executive for over a decade. He was granted free legal aid and is set to appear in court for sentencing on 21 October.
