Multiple champion jockey Oisín Murphy has been fined £70,000 and banned from driving for 20 months after admitting to drink driving. This incident occurred when he crashed his car into a tree earlier this year. Murphy appeared at Reading Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while over the alcohol limit. He was also charged with failing to cooperate with a preliminary test at the roadside.
The 29-year-old jockey was charged after driving his grey Mercedes A Class off the road and into a tree in Hermitage, Berkshire. Despite his legal issues, Murphy had a successful week at Royal Ascot, winning five races in total. Murphy's defence barrister, Alex Di Francesco, conveyed Murphy's apologies to his passenger, the public, and other road users. Despite his legal troubles, Murphy is scheduled to participate in upcoming races in Saratoga and Sandown.
