Champion jockey fined £70k for drink driving incident
Jockey Oisin Murphy was fined £70,000 for driving under the influence. He was found to have a breathalyser reading just under twice the legal limit. Despite this, he was allowed to continue riding with new conditions on his licence.

Murphy had a passenger with him during the crash, who was the car owner. Both were taken to the hospital after the incident. Murphy was discharged to undergo a breathalyser test at a police station around 07:00, revealing a reading of 66mg per 100 millilitres of breath - nearly double the legal limit.
Judge Sam Goozee, during sentencing, mentioned Murphy's luck in avoiding injuries to himself, the passenger, or the public due to his actions. The judge acknowledged Murphy's remorse and recognition of letting down the public and his racing colleagues.
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) stated that Murphy could continue riding but would likely face new conditions on his licence following the conviction. A BHA spokesperson emphasized that Murphy's conduct did not meet the expected standards and posed a serious risk to safety.
Murphy, a four-time UK champion jockey, hailing from Killarney, County Kerry, has achieved significant success in the sport. Updates on his licence will be provided by the BHA in the future.
