EU Ready to Retaliate if US Trade Deal Fails

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the EU is prepared for a trade deal with the United States but cautioned that Brussels is ready to retaliate with countermeasures if no satisfactory agreement is reached. Negotiations with the US are ongoing, with preparations for the possibility of no deal in place.

The EU is working to keep certain sectors free of tariffs while accepting 10% duties on other goods. The deadline for an agreement is next week, after which US tariffs may increase significantly. The goal is to reach an agreement in principle by July 9, given the substantial trade volume between the EU and the US.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of a swift and straightforward EU deal with Washington for key industries. The EU is prepared to implement counter-tariffs on US goods worth €100 billion if necessary.

Efforts are ongoing to secure a favorable agreement by July 9, with hopes for zero tariffs in key areas. US tariffs of 10% on Irish exports are expected to become the new standard.
