BBC to Stop Broadcasting 'High-Risk' Glastonbury Performances

BBC will no longer broadcast 'high-risk performances' at Glastonbury Festival or any event likely to breach broadcasting standards after anti-Israel comments by an artist this year. Politicians in the UK condemned band Bob Vylan for chanting 'death to the IDF' during their performance at the festival. Police launched a criminal investigation into the comments by frontman Bobby Vylan, who performed before Irish rap trio Kneecap, also under investigation.

The BBC faced pressure for broadcasting Bob Vylan's gig live and apologized for the comments but stated appropriate risk assessments were done. Seven acts were deemed 'high-risk' this year, with all suitable for live-streaming with mitigations. Following Bobby Vylan's remarks, the BBC will no longer broadcast high-risk events and will have editorial policy staff on-site at major music festivals for compliance.

The BBC will provide a guide on when to withdraw a livestream after questions arose on why the set continued after the remarks. Bob Vylan accused politicians of diverting attention from inaction on Israel's war in Gaza by condemning artists supporting Palestine. The BBC announced it would not broadcast Kneecap's set live but make it available on-demand later. Access to the West Holts stage was closed before the gig due to capacity.

Political leaders, including PM Keir Starmer, found the band's attendance inappropriate after a member faced terror charges. Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, aka Mo Chara, appeared in court for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag and supporting Hamas. He was released on bail to appear in August, with the band claiming the charges are politically motivated.
