China Warns EU: Russia Must Not Lose War Against Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping attended a welcoming ceremony before their talks at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, Thursday, May 8, 2025.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told the European Union’s top diplomat that Beijing cannot accept Russia losing its war against Ukraine. Wang mentioned that such an outcome could shift the U.S. focus to China, contradicting China’s public stance of neutrality in the conflict. Wang made these comments during a meeting with EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas in Brussels. He suggested that China might prefer a prolonged war in Ukraine to keep the U.S. occupied away from the Pacific region.

Wang denied accusations of China providing military or financial support to Russia. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning reiterated China’s neutral position on the Ukraine crisis, emphasizing negotiation, ceasefire, and peace. Despite growing ties between China and Russia since the conflict began, China denies providing military support to Russia.

Ukraine has imposed sanctions on Chinese companies, accusing them of supplying drone components used in Russian missile production. Following a Russian drone attack on Kyiv, Ukraine shared images of debris from a drone marked 'made in China.' The Chinese Consulate General in Odesa also suffered minor damage from Russian strikes.

China has denied allegations of Chinese citizens fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine and reiterated its stance on avoiding involvement in military activities.
