Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri reported that local police and firefighters responded to a gas leak report, with two subsequent explosions. Sixteen residents were injured, two severely, and were hospitalized. Nine law enforcement officers and one firefighter were also injured but not in life-threatening conditions. Firefighting teams are working to control the fire, and an investigation into the cause of the explosion has begun. Nearby areas were evacuated, and residents described the explosion as loud and violent, causing damage to buildings. Pope Leo XIV and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed concern and support for those affected.
