Yankees Trade for Ryan McMahon to Fill Third Base Gap

The Yankees acquired Ryan McMahon from the Rockies to fill their third base position. The trade involved sending lefty pitching prospect Griffin Herring and righty minor league pitcher Josh Grosz to Colorado. Despite previous rumors linking the Yankees to Eugenio Suarez, a deal could not be reached due to a gap in value.

McMahon, a 2024 All-Star, brings a proven track record to the Yankees, although he has never had an OPS above .779 despite playing at Coors Field for nine seasons. The third base position has been a weakness for the Yankees this year, with DJ LeMahieu struggling and young players Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas underperforming.

McMahon, 30, is under contract for two more years with a total of $32 million. He is currently hitting .217 with a .717 OPS, 16 home runs, and 35 RBIs this season. Known for his defensive skills, McMahon is considered a plus-defender at third base.

The Yankees are focusing on pitching acquisitions this deadline, with more moves expected to strengthen their rotation and bullpen. By retaining their top prospects in this trade, the Yankees have additional assets to pursue pitching upgrades.

Herring had an impressive season in Single-A with a 1.17 ERA and 102 strikeouts, while Grosz posted a 4-8 record with a 4.14 ERA in his starts.
