Warning: Popular supplements may cause organ damage and serious health risks

Britons taking over-the-counter supplements are at risk of organ damage and death by skipping a crucial step, experts warn. A survey by Which? found that three quarters of Britons take supplements, with one in five taking four or more daily. However, 37% did not consult a health professional or undergo blood tests before starting them, risking overdosing on vitamins or minerals.

Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine warned of dangerous effects, such as interactions with medications or exacerbating health conditions. She advised consulting a professional before starting a new supplement routine, especially for those on medication or with medical conditions.

The survey of 2,514 UK adults revealed that misinformation, especially among young people, is a concern. Some rely on platforms like TikTok for supplement information, leading to potential risks.

Which? highlighted vitamin A, vitamin B6, and turmeric as supplements needing caution. Excessive vitamin A intake has been linked to liver damage and bone problems. High doses of vitamin B6 can cause nerve problems, while curcumin supplements may lead to liver toxicity.

Experts caution against high doses of supplements and urge consulting professionals before starting any new regimen to avoid serious health risks.
