Extreme Heat in Germany: New Weather Forecast Brings Bad News - High Health Risk

Germany is experiencing a record-breaking June heatwave, with another wave on the horizon. A weather column by Dominik Jung.

Update as of July 2, 1:20 pm: The heatwave is peaking in Germany on Wednesday. Widespread heat warnings were issued, with temperatures expected to reach nearly 40 degrees. The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of extreme heat stress.

High-level heat warnings covered large parts of Germany, with temperatures ranging from 35 to 39 degrees, locally up to 40 degrees. The situation is expected to calm down later in the day with thunderstorms forecasted in various regions.

On July 1, temperatures are expected to peak at 40 degrees, affecting other European countries as well. Spain, Austria, the UK, and France are also facing extreme heat.

Since June 30, Germany and parts of Europe have been hit by an early and intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees. The heat poses health risks, especially in urban areas and on paved surfaces.

The ongoing dry spell has led to extreme wildfire risk, with little relief expected from minimal rainfall. The situation is challenging for sensitive individuals, and pets are also affected by the prolonged heat.

Despite a slight temperature drop mid-week, models suggest a return of heat in early July, potentially reaching 35-39 degrees, especially in western Germany.

June 2025 is on track to be one of the top 5 warmest June months on record, posing significant health risks for vulnerable populations. Relief measures like staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous activities are recommended.
