Taoiseach Supports Banning Sunbed Use in Ireland
Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed his support for legislation to ban sunbed use in Ireland, citing it as a straightforward preventive measure. The move comes in response to rising cancer rates, with skin cancer being the most common form in Ireland. Efforts are underway to address the issue, including discussions on lessons from Australia's sunbed ban and calls for increased funding for cancer control programs.

TAOISEACH MICHEÁL MARTIN has expressed support for banning sunbed use in Ireland. In a statement to The Journal in Tokyo, Japan, he stated, \"I would hope we would bring in legislation and I favour it, and it’s something I would be advocating for.\" He emphasized the importance of preventive measures, calling it a \"no brainer.\"
His remarks coincide with the Irish Cancer Society's warning of a projected doubling in cancer cases by 2045 in Ireland. Recently, the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and the Institute of Public Health (IPH) organized an event to address sunbed use in Ireland, drawing insights from Australia's ban on sunbeds.
Minister of State Jennifer Murnane O’Connor highlighted the government's commitment to reducing the risk of skin cancer, with a working group established to explore the ban on sunbeds. While usage by under 18s has been prohibited since 2010, it remains legal for adults.
Skin cancer is prevalent in Ireland, with over 11,000 cases diagnosed annually. The Taoiseach noted significant investments in cancer treatment and prevention, leading to a decline in cancer mortality rates.
CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, Averil Power, has called for increased funding for cancer control programs in the upcoming Budget 2026, emphasizing awareness campaigns on nicotine products' harmful effects and support for smoking cessation programs. Additionally, proposals include installing sunscreen dispensers in public areas and creating shaded spaces in playgrounds and schools.
