Irish Heart Foundation Steps in to Support Thrombosis Patients

The Irish Heart Foundation has announced that it will now support patients with thrombosis, following the closure of charity Thrombosis Ireland. Thrombosis Ireland was dedicated to raising awareness about blood clotting conditions and providing resources. With the charity ceasing its operations, the Irish Heart Foundation will step in to offer support to those affected by thrombosis. This includes providing information about the condition and its symptoms, as well as extending its mission to eliminate preventable death and disability from heart disease and stroke to include thrombosis.

Thrombosis, which includes conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), affects a significant number of people annually. It is considered the third most common cardiovascular disease after heart attacks and strokes, with an estimated 4,000 deaths related to thrombosis each year. The Irish Heart Foundation aims to raise awareness about conditions like thrombosis to reduce the risk of death or disability and provide support to those living with these conditions.

Ann-Marie O’Neill, the founder of Thrombosis Ireland, will join the Irish Heart Foundation council on thrombosis in an advisory role. Patients with thrombosis can experience various symptoms depending on the location and size of the blood clot. These symptoms may include swelling or pain in the limbs, warmth or redness, shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing, or severe headaches.
