Small Meteor Pieces Possibly Landed on Ben Nevis, Experts Suggest

Experts believe that fragments of a small meteor that illuminated the night sky over the UK may have landed in and around Ben Nevis. The meteor was observed by many in the west Highlands, with reports of an orange glow and a loud noise. The UK Meteor Network indicated that the meteor likely originated from the region between Mars and Jupiter and descended to about 12 miles above the ground, potentially scattering pieces across a wide area near lochs Treig and Etricht.

Small Meteor Pieces Possibly Landed on Ben Nevis, Experts Suggest

Pieces of a small meteor that lit up the night sky over parts of the UK on Thursday may have landed on and around Ben Nevis, according to experts. Dozens of people in the west Highlands reported an orange glow and a 'bang', and the meteor was captured streaking across the sky on doorbell security cameras.

The UK Meteor Network (UKMON) suggested that the small meteor had traveled from between Mars and Jupiter, descending to about 12 miles (20km) above the ground. Pieces of the meteor could be scattered across a wide area between lochs Treig and Etricht.

The network, which involves more than 200 amateur astronomers, uses observations, captured footage, and computer programs to calculate orbits and trajectories to determine where meteorites may land.

The sightings of the small meteor were reported after midnight, with potential locations for the meteorites believed to be around Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain. Residents in nearby areas felt their houses shake, with one witness describing the experience as scary and confusing.

Ray Whyte, who was working in Glen Nevis near Ben Nevis, recounted being startled by the meteor while staying in a static caravan with his dog. The loud noise and shaking left them both scared and confused.
