Ryanair Increases Size Limits for Free Cabin Bags
Ryanair is updating its free cabin bag size to 40cm x 30cm x 15cm, larger than the new European standard. The airline has not disclosed the reason for this change. Other budget airlines like Easyjet and Wizz Air have similar or larger allowances. The EU is working on a minimum free bag size agreement to ease passenger confusion and avoid unexpected fees.

Ryanair announced that a new free bag size will be implemented in the coming weeks as their bag size measuring devices are adjusted to the new standard. The current maximum bag size is 40cm x 25cm x 20cm, which exceeds the new European standard of 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. Ryanair did not disclose the reason for increasing the carry-on bag allowance.
However, the new size is still smaller than Easyjet's allowance, which permits a free underseat bag of 45cm x 36cm x 20cm (including wheels and handles) weighing up to 10kg. Wizz Air also allows a cabin bag of 40cm x 30cm x 20cm with a weight limit of 10kg.
British Airways (BA) has a slightly smaller limit for an under-seat laptop bag or handbag at 40cm x 30cm x 15cm, but passengers can also bring a larger cabin bag free of charge, with a maximum weight of 23kg.
The European Union has been collaborating with airlines to establish a minimum free bag size to provide consistency for frequent travelers. This rule applies to EU-based airlines like Easyjet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air, although airlines can choose to accept larger bags if they wish.
Confusion over the varying minimum sizes has led to issues for passengers, resulting in unexpected extra fees when their bags did not meet specified dimensions. Recently, the transport committee of the European parliament voted to grant passengers the right to an additional piece of free hand luggage weighing up to 7kg. The proposed rule still requires approval from the wider European parliament.
Passengers are advised to verify baggage rules directly with their airlines.
