DOJ Continues Search for Missing Cockfighting Enthusiasts

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is actively investigating the disappearance of 34 cockfighting enthusiasts, known as 'sabungeros,' which has escalated into a matter of national concern.

Remulla mentioned that the DOJ has been preparing the case for almost three years and is close to filing formal charges against multiple suspects, potentially including public figures.

He confirmed that Gretchen Barretto's name surfaced in the investigation but stressed that the information is still being verified and has not led to formal charges.

Remulla also mentioned the possibility of some suspects becoming state witnesses, highlighting the importance of testimony from key individuals like alias 'Totoy,' an alleged insider in the abductions.

The search for the missing individuals is ongoing, with authorities gearing up to explore a freshwater lake suspected to be a potential dumping site for the victims.

Remulla acknowledged the initial skepticism surrounding the case due to the involvement of influential individuals but affirmed the DOJ's commitment to seeing the case through to its resolution.

In a separate development, the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs conducted inquiries and proposed urgent actions to address the rise in missing persons associated with cockfighting and online gambling activities.
