The Punjab Wildlife Department has launched a crackdown against illegal keeping of lions and other wild animals following orders from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. In the past 24 hours, officials recovered 13 lions and arrested five individuals from different districts. Five FIRs have been registered, with investigations ongoing in two additional cases. Wildlife rangers inspected 22 locations across the province, seizing lions in Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan. Officials estimate around 587 big cats are kept in Punjab illegally. Punjab Information Minister warned of risks to public safety and emphasized zero-tolerance for illegal possession of dangerous animals. The public is urged to report any illegal keeping of lions or other dangerous animals.
In a separate incident, a man was arrested in Lahore for keeping an African lion without a licence after it escaped. The lion was safely captured and relocated to a wildlife facility. The incident caused panic in the neighbourhood, injuring three residents who received medical treatment.
