Australia is currently hosting Exercise Talisman Sabre, its biggest war-fighting drills to date, involving over 35,000 military personnel from 19 countries. The exercise includes live-fire missile launches and is expected to attract Chinese surveillance ships.

Australia is hosting its largest-ever military drills, Exercise Talisman Sabre, involving over 35,000 personnel from 19 nations. The war-fighting drills are taking place at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Queensland state. The exercises include live-fire demonstrations using the HIMARS missile system recently acquired from the United States. Talisman Sabre, which began in 2005 as a joint exercise between the U.S. and Australia, now includes military personnel from countries like Canada, Japan, and the UK. Chinese surveillance ships are expected to monitor the exercises, as they have done in previous years.
The drills officially started with a ceremony attended by military officials from the U.S. and Australia. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, currently on a visit to China, stated that Chinese surveillance would not be a major concern during the exercises. The military activities are seen as a demonstration of Australia's defense alliance with the U.S. and are being closely watched by regional observers.
