Canadian Forces Confirm Quebec Terrorism Suspects Did Not Obtain Weapons from Them

The four Quebec City area men arrested by the RCMP last week in connection to an alleged terrorism plot did not acquire their weapons, ammunition, or explosives from the Canadian Armed Forces, as per a statement from the Department of National Defence.

The statement, issued on Monday, clarified that the seized weapons did not come from the Canadian Armed Forces and that the Military Police and Canadian Army are assisting the ongoing RCMP investigation without disclosing further details.

The arrested suspects, including Marc-Aurèle Chabot, Simon Angers-Audet, and Raphaël Lagacé, were charged with facilitating terrorist activity and are facing potential lengthy prison sentences.

Another suspect, Matthew Forbes, faces charges related to possession of firearms, explosives, and controlled items. Forbes was granted bail under strict conditions, including wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet and refraining from possessing any weapons or communicating with other suspects.

The RCMP uncovered a significant cache of weapons and ammunition during searches in January 2024, leading to the arrest of the suspects allegedly involved in planning to forcibly take over land in the Quebec City area.

The accused individuals were reportedly engaged in military-style training and activities related to violent extremism, with plans to establish their own militia.

The suspects have not been performing military duties and do not have unescorted access to the Valcartier military base in the Quebec City area.

A lawyer representing Quebec news organizations has filed a motion to unseal and disclose search warrants and other judicial authorizations obtained by the RCMP during a hearing scheduled for the first week of August.
