The United States confirmed that its Navy–Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) missile system was used for the first time in a live-fire test in the Philippines during the recent Balikatan Exercise. The NMESIS anti-ship missiles were fired alongside other military drills during the joint exercises. The missile system was deployed in strategic locations near Taiwan, enhancing deterrence capabilities against China in the West Philippine Sea.
The NMESIS, a ground-based, vehicle-mounted launcher, is capable of firing the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) with a range of up to 185 kilometers, bolstering coastal defense and maritime security. The US Marines positioned the NMESIS in the Philippines to increase their deterrence capabilities. The missile system was also used during the Kamandag Exercise, showcasing its importance in strengthening defense partnerships.
